Vernon Masters Puts on a Carnival
Vernon, January 27, 2019 — The Vernon Masters Swim Club held a successful Swim meet on Jan. 27th. There were 50 swimmers including teams from up and down the Okanagan valley; Penticton to Salmon Arm and Kamloops. There was also a dedicated delegation from the Winskill Otters who had competed the previous day in Nanaimo. One of the more exciting races was the final heat of the 50 Fly where 2 provincial records were set; Floor Terpstra 18-24 and Mike Stamhuis 65-69. A third provincial record was set in the 100 Fly by Kurt Ochi 40-44.
The Vernon Masters would like to give a large thank you to the Okanagan Valley College of Massage Therapy for providing swimmers with massages during the event. As ever, it would be impossible to put on this event without the help of the Vernon Kokanee Swim Club. They provided most of the senior officials for the meet as well as the timing pads and score board and the great new starting blocks with backstroke boards. Finally we would like to acknowledge the generous support and assistance from the Vernon Rec Centre for the facilities.
Lots of Love From the English Bay Classic
Sunday, February 10, 2019 - Well, another EBSC ‘Love to Swim’ has come & gone and it’s time for me to sit down and recap this year’s event.
Being Meet Manager, as opposed to a participant, I saw the meet from a different angle this year. Swimmers see a meet as a one-day affair but, in reality, it takes months of preparations to get all of the pieces in place. I would like to send out a great Thank-you! to fellow EBSC’ers David Clarke (Clerk of Course), David Webb (Officials Co-ordinator), Fraser Norrie (Head Timer & Volunteer Co-ordinator) & Michael DiPietro (Registrar) for, without whom, all of these ‘pieces’ would not have fallen into place. And, of course, a big thank-you goes out to all the volunteers involved as no event such as this can function without their hard work!
On what turned out to be a snowy Sunday in February, we had 180 swimmers from 23 teams hailing from not only B.C. but also Alberta, the Yukon and Washington State descend upon the Vancouver Aquatic Centre for a day of amazing & inspiring swims. The ages ranged from 19 to 95 and, in all, 13 B.C. Provincial Records were set (5 relays & 8 individual) and of those were also Canadian National Records.
Among these amazing swims were also some pretty close sheer misses for records and, of course, tons of ‘personal bests’ from many of the competitors throughout the day. Great swimming to you all!
For inspirational swims, we need not look any further than Aart Loye’s participation fighting back (as he is so well known for) from a debilitating stroke suffered a few years back. We would expect no less from him!
As always, the Pink Flamingo Relay was a crowd pleaser and after a closely heated first 2 laps, the Victoria Masters once again swam away with the box of chocolates! You would think that with all the chocolates they have won and eaten over the years of this relay, they would have slowed down a bit?
In closing, I would be amiss if I didn’t send out a big Thank-you! to Rob Traynor who ran the electronic timing system and to Charles Tai (Head Referee) and all the officials who took time out of their day to make sure this meet ran smoothly!
Thank-you to everyone, swimmers – officials – volunteers, for making this year’s event, as in the past, so much fun!
Who Won Nanaimo's Chili Cookoff?
Saturday, January 26, 2019 - Nanaimo Ebbtides hosted the 38th annual masters swim meet at the Nanaimo Aquatic center, with a 150 swimmers. The racing was off to a great start with 95 year old Betty Brussel making a Canadian record in the 400 free, soon to be followed by many more! Congratulations Betty, you are truly an inspiration to us all. Other records of note were performed by Jack Kelso, who has now aged up to 80 years young and broke Canadian records in 50 Fly, 50 back, 50 Breast, 50 Free, congratulations! Other noteworthy swims, Ian Burvill’s 200 fly BC record, and Andrew Sweet, 50 free, 50 fly, BC record.
I would like to thank the volunteers from the Nanaimo Swimming community- the winter club, Nanaimo Riptides, summer club, White Rapids, and our own Ebbtide members. We could not have hosted the meet, drove to and from the ferry , fed all with the chili cook off, without you all.
I would like to also thank Terry Ryan, Don Irwin, Nancy Ryan, Jeremy Orton, and Darcy Irwin. Part of our amazing official crew these are the unsung heroes of running a swim meet.
A special thanks to Team Aquatic supplies for their amazing support.
Hope to see you all in Nanaimo next year.

It has become the largest and longest running open water swim event in Canada and has been named as one of the Top World Open Water Swims. Last year the swim celebrated its 70th Anniversary!
According to Kathy Conway, CEO of Interior Savings, “This is an event all of us in the Okanagan should be proud of. Even with its success and notoriety on the global stage, it continues to be a truly iconic local event vested in the betterment of our community.”
The annual swim challenges young and old alike to achieve their personal best while also raising money to provide free swimming lessons to every grade three student in our school district. To date the Society, with the support of its community partners and sponsors, has provide 12,500 kids with free swim lessons.
“We’re excited to celebrate our tenth year of helping to drown proof the Okanagan,” continued Conway. “Given the abundance of water sports in the Okanagan, we recognize the critical role this event plays in providing water safety skills to our kids.”
Race Director Peter Rudd highlighted the important role Interior Savings plays in the event. “It’s the best gift we could receive for our swim, and for water safety in our community. Interior Savings not only provides financial support, they also support us with volunteers. It’s a real team effort,” said Rudd.
“You can help us in our mission to keep kids safe in the water by registering yourself, your family or giving the gift of registration to help someone else participate,” added Rudd, “but register before Feb 28th to take advantage of early bird pricing!”.
